Ian raises over £4000 for Barnardo's

Ian Drinkwater, Applelec’s managing director, has completed this year’s London Marathon to raise over £4000 for Barnardo’s in a race that’s seen a lifetime ambition finally fulfilled.

Taking place on Sunday 26th April and featuring 36,000 runners, it had been a 35-year dream of Ian’s to participate in the London Marathon, ever since watching the inaugural race on television in 1981.

Ian said: ‘Seeing the exertion of the runners and imagining the thrill of crossing the finishing line made taking part in the marathon something I’ve wanted to do ever since watching that first race.’

If approaching a ‘significant birthday’ was the catalyst for Ian’s participation in the 2016 race, raising money for a charity that means a lot to Ian and his family provided the motivation.

Ian explains: ‘Barnardo’s helps transform the lives of the most vulnerable children across the UK. Like me, they believe that all children deserve a chance to reach their full potential. I hoped that running and raising money for Barnardo’s would help them to continue doing the incredible work they do.’

In preparation for the 26.2 mile marathon, Ian devised an intensive training plan involving long distance running three times a week beginning in December of 2015. The programme saw Ian cover over 400 miles during these five months of preparations. And the training paid off as Ian completed the half-way mark in just over two hours and finished the marathon with an impressive final time of 4 hours, 36 minutes and 53 seconds.
